BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Holy Spirit baptism is another experience after salvation that gives a believer greater spiritual power, authority, boldness and the ability to become an effective witness for Christ, and to live a more victorious Christian life. When you are baptized in the Holy Spirit, you are saturated, permeated and indwelt by the Spirit of God in a fuller measure.

John the Baptist foretold of this baptism

Luke 3:16 – John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.

Holy Ghost Baptism was promised by Jesus

Luke 24:49 – Behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you, but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-5 – And being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, said He, you have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

The promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost

Acts 2:1-4 – When the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

We saw that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, in other words, they were baptized with the Holy Spirit and with fire (the fire sat on top of each of their heads), with an initial evidence of speaking in an unknown language. The Spirit of God that filled them took hold of their tongues and starts to speak through their mouths. There was evidence, not an inner feeling.

Acts 2:39 – For the promise (baptism of the Holy Spirit) is unto you and to your children and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Incidences of people who received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the Bible

Acts 10:44 – While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the Word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Acts 19:6 – And when Paul had laid his hand upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied.

Apostle Paul testifies of his own personal experience:

1 Corinthians 14:18 – I thank my God; I speak with tongues more than you all.

1 Corinthians 14:1 – Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. For he who speaks in an unknown tongues does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. I would that ye all spoke with tongues….

1 Corinthians 14:39 – Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

From the above several references, it is quite obvious that baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues is for today and is for YOU. So, whatever you’ve heard or been taught contrary to the above truth, I would encourage you to throw them in the garbage can, that’s where they belong, and ask Jesus to baptize you with the Holy Spirit and Fire today, with an evidence of speaking in the language of the Spirit.
